Torchwood (S2E13)
thoughts on season finale Exit Wounds...
i dunno if i've had enough time to process everything properly. and i have a splitting headache from going to bed after bawling my eyes out. twice. i watched it twice in a row. i know... stupid.
i'm kind of in shock. i prefer to stay unspoiled, but i am always strongly tempted to be spoiled. in one of my weaker moments, i briefly spied a rumor, so i had a strong sense about tosh & owen, but in no way KNEW.
toshiko
i'm saddened and disappointed, especially about tosh. i've felt she was being underutilized, as i think her character had great potential, and almost feel as if they killed her off because they didn't want to bother with her anymore, so i'm also a bit angry. naoko mori did a fabulous job in this ep, and i don't know if i've ever seen anyone 'die' any better (that sentence is all kinds of wrong). she was absolutely brilliant. tangent: how gorgeous is she? really. what a beautiful woman.
owen
i'm somewhat on the fence about owen. i thought they should have killed him when they originally had him die, and was annoyed by his 'death' story arc. so part of me is glad that they finally finished what they started, as i wasn't keen on the dead man walking scenario continuing, especially into another season. but now i feel a bit guilty about that. the scenes with him and tosh at the end were heart-breaking and beautiful. as stated above, i was literally sobbing. i think i am going to really miss these two. *tears up again*
(EDIT: if both tosh & owen really did die, i take solace somehow in the fact that they died together. that they will be there for each other on the other side. i fancy the thought that they will meet each other with a smile, and embark on whatever there is in the afterlife with the other by their side. so they aren't alone, and they are unafraid. i refuse to believe in the darkness that has been spoken of in past episodes. and even if this is where owen goes, it certainly isn't where tosh belongs. and she will come and find him, and bring him along with her, out of the darkness.)
jack
my god this man has been thru some crazy shit. how is he still sane? to list just a few... he's lost two years of his life, and who knows what happened to him all that time. he was stuck in a time loop (or whatever) with the same man for five years. he was chained and tortured on the valiant for a whole year, assumingly murdered over and over again. and now he's been BURIED ALIVE for almost 2000 years? seriously... HOW IS HE STILL SANE??? will they have this affect his character in any way? he seemed perfectly fine (wtf?) after being dug up. it apparently didn't affect his memory or emotional connection to those around him, even tho i should think it would. and what about his feelings for ianto? do they start up again where they left off? he's been underground for 2000 years, so where does that put him in his relationships with everybody? me thinks they will just gloss over all that (like they did with the year that never was) and have the whole 'gray' issue be his emotional torture instead. i don't see how they compare at all, but whatever.
gray
not sure if its supposed to be gray or grey, but i don't really care either. looks-wise, they picked a great actor to play jb's brother (and cute too). but he also looks a bit young considering the approximate ages of the kids in the flashbacks. i know, unimportant. plus the whole time travel issue, blah blah blah. and what was he wearing? straightjacket? makes sense.
so he's one messed up dude. (see... THIS is what you would expect from being tortured for years, right? and yet jack is never affected one bit, hmm? i dunno, whatever). i really hate him for shooting tosh, and then taunting her like he did. twisted fuck. with him in the freezer, i don't think it'll be long before we see more of this character. not fond of that idea.
john
again, we have definitely not seen the last of spike. he will be back (good? evil? i think they could go either way). and again, i'm not sure if i'm fond of this idea. i like how jack turned his head when john went to kiss him. i guess i don't have much to say about spike. except what was the deal with the whole 'our song' dancy thing in the beginning? just weird.
gwen
i gotta be honest. i wish it had been gwen who took a bullet to the gut instead of tosh. she is just so whiny and needy and... ugh. i just can't be brought to believe her in a leadership role. her immediately taking control of the situation and ordering the others. her rallying the troops at the police station. i just don't buy it for her character. it was corny and cliched and wrong. the only good thing i like about gwen being around, is that we get rhys and pc andy by extension. both of whom i adore, and i loved them both in this ep. how they both love & fawn over gwen tho? urgh! and god, i wish she'd just keep her hands off jack for once.
ianto
there wasn't much of my beloved boy in this episode. thank the heavens he is still alive and kicking tho, as i had been quite worried. i'm really uncertain about where he is and where he's going as part of the team. assuming there is a third season, my biggest concern is what they will do with ianto. how will he fit in in the scheme of things? whether they keep him in the background, or bring him to the foreground, i just want them to do his character justice. take care of him and use him wisely, in whatever aspect that may be. please. just DO HIM JUSTICE.
as i touched on above, where does this put the jack/ianto relationship? i think ianto is truly in love with jack. i like how he immediately went to shoot john, and threatened to kill him 'very slowly' if they didn't find jack. they got an awkward semi-hug, but that was pretty much it as far as interaction between the two. i was hoping to see more (something, anything) with just the two of them. i think they left it deliberately ambiguous, so they have the option to go either way with the relationship next season.
i'm not sure how i feel about ianto's reaction (or lack thereof?) to tosh dying. they just had him standing back and watching, and we didn't get ANY reaction shot of him in that scene in the med bay (autopsy room, whatever). was that on purpose because his character is so stoic and such? was it gdl's acting? are they trying to show how ianto is just a subordinate and not really a part of the team? was it just logistically difficult? i CAN appreciate ianto maintaining a stiff upper lip under these circumstances, and thought gdl's responses appropriate for his character in the next sequence. i particularly liked the way he appeared to swallow his grief a couple of times, and there was an ALmost eyeroll at gwen's ridiculous "i can't go on" statement that was brilliant. i love watching this man. please, let me keep loving to watch him next season. PLEASE.
points of interest:
how DID all 6 of them fit in that car?
rhys & andy. oh, how i adore you both :) i think this is the first time we had the two together. yes? no?
this scene...
ianto: there we are then.
tosh: sorted.
awesome!
same scene. it sounds like there were 4 shots fired. who shot whom/what/how many? lame, i know, but i'm still curious.
15 bombs. okay, but i was expecting something a bit more disastrous.
tosh: that could be suicide.
ianto: are we gonna discuss it or are we gonna do it?
so much love for this boy.
how wonderful is rhys? how much does gwen SO not deserve him.
gray has a wristband too? or did he take jack's? will have to go back and pay more attention.
owen: king of the weevils, remember?
hehe.
i STILL can't make out what rhys & andy say to each other after locking up the weevils.
is it wrong for me to think how hot ianto is with a gun? and he's obviously gotten much more confident with it since the first ep of the season.
locked in the cells? so saw that coming.
ianto: *yells* what have you done with him?
see? ianto loves jack.
tosh! let the bawling begin.
i KNEW the knocking was jack. i just didn't know where/how.
so enjoy that old school torchwood chick.
pretty coherent for a man who's been BURIED ALIVE for 2000 years. *shakes head*
thank you jack for being smart enough to smother your crazy ass brother and not let him kill you or something again.
where did that techno thingamajig come from spike? did i miss something? is that his wriststrap?
again, what did andy say to rhys? is that the name of a city? was it welsh? (tangent: i so wanna see ianto speak welsh)
(EDIT: andy apparently says "abergavenny", which is indeed a town in wales. i obviously do not 'get' the reference)
ack! i dunno if i could stick myself with a needle like that. you are so brave tosh! and i am SO bawling.
get OFF of jack, gwen! let ianto have his moment with the man!
owen! god this WAS heartbreaking. and tosh NEVER lets on that she's dying.
spacepig! so THAT explains it. i was wondering how/why they had her be a doctor AND a techie.
tosh never takes her eyes off jack, and she's smiling and she's beautiful, and oh my god.
gwen looks around to ianto, and why do i find that awkward? (see above)
we get a rhys/gwen moment, where is our jack/ianto moment?
as stated above, i like how jack turns his head when john goes to kiss him. no more lip locks for you! (i want to believe this is because of ianto, but i'm sure its not)
owen's coat (the buttons!)... bawls. tosh's glasses... bawls.
gosh gwen has duck lips.
oh tosh... you did do good!
so what does this all mean for torchwood? who knows where they will go with the show next season. i'm nervous and anxious... but i can't wait! and its going to be a LONG wait.

i'm confused. oh wait... maybe i'm not.
